At a meeting with Great Britain Prime Minister Donald Trump insulted the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. The feud of the two has a delicate history.
US President Donald Trump is currently on his golf course in Turnberry, Scotland-not only for golf playing. But he also receives high -ranking European politicians. Ursula von der Leyen was a guest on Sunday. The EU Commission President drove back to Brussels with a 15 percent customs on European merchandise-which was rated by commentators as a crashing defeat for the community of states.
It was the turn of Britain’s Premier Keir Strander on Monday. Trump received the 62-year-old Labor politician and his wife Victoria at the entrance to the pompous clubhouse and first pointed out the two of the system.
“If you look at the windows in the different dining rooms, they are simply outstanding,” said Trump, pointing her finger on the windows. “Yes, they are absolutely great,” agreed starter. The British Prime Minister tried to favor Trump early on and makes great efforts not to damage his good relationship with the US President. “Both inside and outside – even if you look at the golf courses yourself and the building,” said Starmer full of admiration.
The 2019 golf course was opened during the first term of office of the Republican. At the time, Trump posted: “I am very proud of the most beautiful golf course in the world. Relations between the United States and Great Britain.” Above all, it also fills the trump organization’s coffers, as critical observers noted. Because the golf course is part of Trump’s real estate empire.
According to most observers, the subsequent press conference contributed little to international understanding. Among other things, Trump made a name for himself with a tirade against the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.
“I am really not a fan of her mayor,” said the US President, when asked by a journalist, whether he would visit London if he came to Great Britain in September. “I think he does a very terrible job … The Mayor of London, he is a bad guy. As I said, he does a terrible job. But I would still visit London, yes.”
It was obviously difficult for strikers to keep the version at the moment. He smiled at first, then he decided to intervene. “Well, he is a friend of mine,” he finally threw in with a view of his Labor colleague Khan. He didn’t say more.
Parts of the British press tear the prime minister’s reaction immediately. “Great Britain embarrassed Great Britain in the presence of the most powerful man in the world,” wrote the “Telegraph”. The performance had shown that the kingdom is not only “a small country, but also more and more an insignificant”.
Trump’s feud with Khan has been going back for a long time. The US President had once insulted Khan as a “merciless loser” and “very stupid”. Previously, London’s mayor had been one of the “fascists of the 21st century”. Khan also allowed it that in 2018 an aircraft was allowed to fly over the British parliament, which a banner duke afterwards, on which Trump was depicted as a jamming baby in diapers. Anti-Trump activists had registered the campaign in the run-up to Trump’s state visit at the time.
Khan countered Trump’s statements a little later. He was “delighted” that the US President “wanted to visit one of the greatest cities in the world”. He can convince himself that diversity makes us stronger, not weaker. That she even makes us richer, not poorer, “said his press spokesman.
And Khan went on. In his statement, he pointed out that many Americans are currently leaving the country to come to London. “Perhaps this is also the reason why so many US citizens have recently applied for British citizenship-under his presidency”.
