86.5 percent of Turkey uses the internet

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu reported that 86.5 percent of Turkey’s population has internet access, 67.4 percent is a social media user and 93.8 percent has a mobile connection.

In his written statement, Uraloğlu evaluated the April data of the Digital 2024 Global Overview and Turkey Report prepared by We Are Social and Meltwater organizations, which report digital data worldwide every year.

Stating that the mobile phone usage rate worldwide will exceed 69 percent in 2024, Uraloğlu stated that 5.65 billion people worldwide use mobile phones as of this year.

Uraloğlu reported that the number of unique mobile users increased by 2.4 percent last year, reaching 133 million.

Pointing out that internet usage has increased greatly around the world, Uraloğlu stated that 67.1 percent of the world’s population, or 5.44 billion people, will be online in 2024.

Uraloğlu drew attention to the fact that the number of global internet users increased by 3.4 percent compared to last year. Stating that the number of social media users worldwide has increased by nearly 35 percent since the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak and that nearly 1 billion new users have arrived in the last 3 years, Uraloğlu said, “Although the growth in the number of users has slowed down significantly last year, it is still increasing. The number of users, which was 1.7 billion in 2013 and 3.46 billion in 2018, reached 5.07 billion in April, an increase of 5.4 percent compared to the previous year.”

“Türkiye IS 36TH IN INTERNET ADOPTION RATE”

Uraloğlu, who reported that Turkey ranks 36th in terms of internet adoption rate by population with 86.5 percent, continued his statement as follows:

“When it comes to time spent on the internet, our country ranks 19th in the world with 7 hours and 6 minutes per day. 86.5 percent of our population is internet users, 67.4 percent is social media users, and 93.8 percent has a mobile connection. According to the report, the average download speed for cellular mobile internet is 37.66 megabits, while the average download speed for fixed internet is 41.90 megabits. The main reasons for internet use in Turkey were determined to be finding information, being informed about news and events, researching how to do something, doing product and brand research, and staying in touch with family and friends.”

“FOLLOWING FRIENDS ON SOCIAL MEDIA”

Uraloğlu reported that Instagram ranked first in monthly social media usage per user in Turkey with 21 hours and 24 minutes, and TikTok ranked second with 20 hours and 54 minutes, and said, “In Turkey, the most followed profiles from social media accounts are friends, family and people we know. This is followed by brands we buy or want to buy, television shows or channels, entertainment content, influencers and parody accounts. Turkey ranks 49th in the world with 11.7 percent in terms of following influencers on social media compared to other countries.”

Uraloğlu stated that when the rate of internet users making online purchases every week is examined worldwide, Turkey ranks third with 64.6 percent, and noted the following:

“Factors such as free delivery, easy return policy, coupons and discounts, fast and easy payment and customer reviews are the most important reasons why citizens prefer online shopping. When users who discover new brands, products and services are examined, it was determined that 36.8 percent of them discovered these brands through social media ads. This ranking was followed by search engines, television and application ads and websites of brands or products.”
