Iceland will have a new government shortly before the end of the year. At the top is a relatively young woman.

Kristrún Frostadóttir becomes the new Prime Minister of Iceland. The 36-year-old is the youngest head of government in the country’s history. This was announced by the chairwoman of the Social Democratic Alliance and the party leaders of her two future junior partners at the presentation of their coalition agreement in Reykjavik. With the new government, for the first time there are more women in the cabinet than men.

The new coalition, which is located in the political center, consists of the Social Democratic Alliance, the Liberal Reform Party and the People’s Party. Thorgerdur Katrín Gunnarsdóttir of the Liberals will take over as foreign minister, while Inga Sæland of the People’s Party will be responsible for social affairs and housing.

For the past seven years, Iceland has been led by a broad government made up of the left-green movement and the liberal-conservative Independence Party. However, this coalition collapsed due to disagreements on migration and energy issues, among other things, in the fall of this year, which led to new elections.

In the recent elections, Frostadóttir’s Social Democrats received 20.8 percent of the vote, becoming the strongest force. Together with their coalition partners, they made strong gains and received a total of 36 out of 63 seats in the Icelandic parliament. The previous government parties had to accept some significant losses; The Left-Greens in particular were thrown out of parliament.
