14 March World Pi Day: Why is one of the most special numbers of mathematics celebrated?

This special number, which is shown in mathematics with the symbol of π and is known as approximately 3.14, is important not only for mathematical calculations, but also as an element that emphasizes the aesthetic and poetic aspect of science.

What is PI number?

Pi (π) is a mathematical constant that expresses the ratio of a circle to the diameter. The pi, which is an irrational number with an infinite step, is usually summarized as 3.14 with two decimal steps.

In the 16th century, the galadi mathematician William Jones described this constant with the letter π, inspired by the word ‘periphery’, which means ‘environment’ in Greek. However, it was finalized by the proof of the Swiss mathematician Johann Lambert in the 1760s.
The origin of the number of pi dates back thousands of years ago

Since humanity began to deal with circles, the ratio of a circle to the diameter of the circle has been about three.

About 4 thousand years ago, the Babylonians, the perimeter of the smooth hexagon placed in a circle, was equal to the six times the radius of the circle by calculating the Pi as about 3,125.

B.C. It was suggested that Pi was about 3,16049 in the Rhind Papyrus of the Ancient Egypt from 1650. The famous Greek mathematician Archimedes calculated that Pi was worth between 3,1408 and 3,1429 using polygons.

Why is PI so important?

Pi is only used as a basic principle in many disciplines, especially physics and geometry, beyond being a number of circles. It has a critical role in understanding many phenomena in nature from the structure of atoms to the flow of rivers.

In addition, Pi has a special place in daily life and popular culture.

In 1988, the physicist Larry Shaw, who worked at Exploretorium in San Francisco, realized that March 14 coincided with the first three steps of Pi (3,14).

Since then, the Pi day has been celebrated worldwide.

Mathematics problems are solved, science -related activities are organized and of course, one of the most famous round desserts, Pie (Pie), this special day becomes meaningful.
