How and under what conditions should the war in Ukraine be ended? A group of Western supporting countries in Kyiv are putting their proposals on paper.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expecting a peace plan from the so-called Coalition of the Willing in the coming days. The plan should be short, he told the US portal “Axios”: “A few quick points. Like the plan for a ceasefire. We have decided to work on it in the next week or ten days.” However, he doubts that Russian President Vladimir Putin will agree to the plan, said Zelensky.
The coalition of the willing is about two dozen states, led by Great Britain and France, that want to give Ukraine military security guarantees after a possible ceasefire. After a meeting last Friday in London, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also spoke of a coalition peace plan.
US President Donald Trump has called for an end to fighting in Ukraine along the current front line. Ukraine agreed to this, as did its European supporters. Moscow is insisting, among other things, that Ukrainian troops completely withdraw from the Donetsk region claimed by Russia.
In order to force Putin to the negotiating table, further sanctions against Russia and long-range weapons for Ukraine are necessary, Zelensky told the US portal.
