Violence in Syria – soldiers move in Suwaida

100 dead and around 200 injuries – according to activists, is the preliminary balance of the new violence in Syria. Government troops in Damascus are rolled up trying to stabilize the situation.
In Syria, government soldiers move in the majority of Suwaida inhabited by Drusen in trying to stop violence in the region. Residents and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the German Press Agency today that the troops had moved into the town in the south of the country.
The troops would protect civilians and restore security, said Ahmed al-Dalati, commander of internal security in the province. He announced a curfew in the place from 8 a.m. Residents should stay in their houses.
According to the observation center, more than 100 people have been killed in the violence between members of the Drusian minority and Sunni Bedouins and around 200 more injured, including children. The violence in the southern province started after a robbery on a drusian youth on the expressway between Damascus and Suwaida. There were further kidnapping and finally violence between Drusen and Sunni Bedouins.
With the attempt by government forces to take control in the region, concern is growing before further fighting and sacrificing. According to the observation center, which pursues the conflict in Syria from London with a network of activists, the troops attacked the area with rockets and mortars. Some of them went down in residential areas.
The observation center warned of a “repetition of the scenario on the Syrian coast” – a reference to violence in March, when around 1,500 people were killed in fighting different groups, including many civilians.
The spiritual leadership of the Drusen in Suwaida welcomed the arrival of the troops. Drusian militias should put down the weapons and work with the troops, the spiritual leadership demanded in a message. Dignitators from the area tried to enforce a ceasefire.
In Syria, the long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad was overthrown half a year ago, who led the country into a civil war for more than ten years in 2011. The new government of President Ahmed al-Sharaa has taken control in Damascus and is trying to produce stability in the country. Nevertheless, there were struggling between ethnic groups and militias and also terrorist attacks in past few months.
