The US’s new security strategy is entirely in line with Donald Trump’s America First agenda. Europe is likely to feel this.
The USA has presented its long-awaited new global security strategy. The government of President Donald Trump announces that it will reduce the US military commitment worldwide, including in Europe.
Instead, the US presence in Latin America should be increased to restore US supremacy in the region, according to the document published on Friday. According to Trump’s America First agenda, the USA wants to concentrate on its national interests.
At the same time, the White House is warning of a “civilizational extinction” in Europe. If current developments continue, the continent will “be unrecognizable in 20 years or less,” says the US security strategy.
Among other things, it criticizes the migration policy in the EU. “Mass migration” must be stopped worldwide, the document says. It also denounces alleged “censorship of free expression and the suppression of political opposition” in Europe. However, the “growing influence of patriotic parties” in Europe gives cause for optimism. The USA therefore also wants to “cultivate resistance to Europe’s current course within European nations”.
Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) said of the new US strategy that Germany “does not need any external advice” on questions of free expression or “the organization of our free societies”. In Germany, this is “organized by our constitutional order,” he emphasized in Berlin at a joint press conference with his Icelandic colleague Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir. He referred to the separation of powers and freedom of the press.
Wadephul announced that he would now “intensively evaluate” the new US security strategy. He also emphasized that the USA “is and remains our most important ally” in NATO.
