Court stops Trump’s White House ballroom

Trump takes action again against Fed chairwoman
US President Donald Trump makes a second attempt to fire central bank chief Lisa Cook. Cook has three weeks to respond to allegations of misrepresentation on real estate loans, according to a White House letter seen by AFP on Friday. Trump had already tried to fire Cook last year, but was stopped by the US Supreme Court.
“You are hereby informed that the President is considering removing you from office,” said the letter, dated Aug. 5 and signed by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino. It lists Trump’s allegations against Cook.
US justice system puts construction of the ballroom on hold for the time being
According to a court ruling, US President Donald Trump is not allowed to build his controversial ballroom in the White House on his own. Instead, he would have to obtain congressional approval and construction would therefore have to be halted until further notice, an appeals court ruled. The Trump administration now has 14 days to appeal the decision and take the case to the US Supreme Court.
The judges ruled by a majority of two to one that the government had not been able to show that the US Parliament had given Trump or the National Park Service the authority for such a construction. “Whether or not a giant ballroom should be built is a matter for Congress, not an executive branch issue,” it continued. At the same time, the judges stated that the decision did not necessarily mean that the construction of the ballroom per se was off the table.
Monument preservationists had taken the US government to court to stop Trump’s prestige project. The project is highly controversial because of its costs, the procurement process and the interference with the historic ensemble of the White House and has been the subject of several legal proceedings. Trump, on the other hand, describes his new ballroom as a “great service” for national security. The hall has been under construction since autumn 2025 on the site of the former east wing of the White House.

Allegations of violence: Republicans call on party colleagues to resign
Republican Senator John Husted of Ohio has called on Congressman Max Miller, also a Republican, to resign his seat in the House of Representatives and not run for re-election in the fall. The background is allegations of domestic violence from Miller’s ex-wife Emily Moreno – daughter of Republican Bernie Moreno. Miller was on Donald Trump’s staff during his first presidency and later served as Trump’s deputy chief of staff during the 2020 campaign.
