Merz, Macron and Starmer talk to Trump about Ukraine. Shortly afterwards, Trump said there was an invitation to the USA for a meeting in Europe. However, a US commitment to this is still pending.
According to US President Donald Trump, the USA is invited to a meeting in Europe this weekend, at which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj is also expected to be present. However, Trump left it open whether the USA would attend the meeting – and if so, at what level.
At a meeting in the White House in Washington, Trump initially confirmed that he had discussed the situation in Ukraine by telephone with Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He later said: “They want us to come to a meeting in Europe at the weekend and we will make a decision depending on what they present to us.” He left it open who exactly he was referring to. When asked whether the meeting was also planned with the Ukrainian president, Trump replied: “With Zelensky and us.”
Trump said of the telephone conversation with Merz, Macron and Starmer: “We spoke about Ukraine in pretty clear terms.” There were “some small differences of opinion about people,” he explained without giving details. He again called for elections in Ukraine.
The federal government had previously announced that the four heads of state and government had discussed the status of talks on a ceasefire in Ukraine and wanted to continue intensive work on the peace plan initiated by the USA in the coming days.
