The EU represents its defense policy – also because of Donald Trump. The United States does not want to lose Europe as customers.
The US government has called on its European partners to continue to buy weapons from US companies and not to switch to national companies. This is reported by the US news agency Reuters and relies on discussions with senior officials on both sides. It is believed that Foreign Minister Marco Rubio will continue to underline the concerns when he visited Brussels in the coming week.
Even at meetings with external ministers from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, he is said to have explained that Washington would negatively understand the exclusion of US companies in future tenders. According to the news agency, other representatives of European states report similar statements by representatives of the US government.
At the end of March, the EU decided to the “Readiness 2030” upgrading plan. All Member States came behind the initiative, which provides up to 150 billion euros in loans for defense investments. Exceptions to the debt rules should also be made possible.
Europe’s change in their own armaments policy is a reaction to the first weeks of the second Trump government. Vice President JD Vance had questioned the US military support for Europe at the Munich Security Conference. In addition, the United States had temporarily painted the military aid for Ukraine.
