According to insiders, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has confirmed a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump about ten days ago. The conversation was respectful and cordial, Maduro said in a televised speech on Wednesday. He sees this as a possible opening for diplomacy between the two countries. Four people familiar with the conversation told Reuters on Monday that Maduro had signaled to Trump his willingness to leave Venezuela if he and his family received full legal amnesty, including the lifting of U.S. sanctions and the termination of proceedings at the International Criminal Court. The phone call followed months of US pressure against Venezuela, including attacks on suspected drug smuggling boats, threats of military action and the designation of the Cartel de los Soles cartel as a foreign terrorist organization.
