As far as long-distance missiles are concerned, NATO is poorly positioned from the perspective of the US military. It should also be an issue at the upcoming meeting with Boris Pistorius.
When it comes to the US military, NATO needs more long-range missiles in its arsenal to deter Russia from an attack on Europe. US general John Rafferty is convinced that Moscow will further expand long-distance weapons.
Russia’s effective use of long -range missiles in the war against Ukraine convinced Western military how important these weapons were to destroy command posts, traffic hubs and rocket positions deep in the enemy hinterland. “The Russian army is larger today than at the beginning of the war in Ukraine,” Rafferty told the Reuters news agency in an interview at the US military base in German Wiesbaden.
Rafferty also said: “And we know that they will continue to invest in long -range missiles, marching aircraft and modern air defense systems. Therefore, a stronger ability of the alliance is really, really important.” The war in Ukraine made Europe’s great dependence on the United States in the provision of long -range missiles – Kiev is trying to strengthen its air defense.
Rafferty was most recently commander of the 56th artillery command of the US Army in the Rhineland-Palatinate Mainz Kastel, which is currently preparing for temporary stationation of US long-range missiles in Europe from 2026.
At a meeting with US defense minister Pete Hegseth on Monday, Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) wants to clarify according to information from Reuters whether these stationations are implemented as originally agreed-the agreements between Berlin and Washington were still made under US President Joe Biden, now Donald Trump is back in the White House.
The agreement provides for the stationing of systems such as Tomahawk marching aircraft with a range of 1,800 kilometers and the “Dark Eagle” hypershall weapon with a range of around 3,000 kilometers.
Russia criticized the planned deployment of US long-range missiles in Germany as a serious threat to its own national security. NATO concerns before a Russian attack on an alliance member rejected Moscow and claimed in his part that attack on Ukraine in 2022 was a reaction to NATO eastation.
