Two people were shot in the American city of Portland. They are said to have tried to evade control.

In the city of Portland, Oregon, federal agency officers injured two people by gunfire. The two were taken to a hospital and their condition was unknown, Portland police said on Thursday.

The local police were not involved in the incident. As ABC reports, the shooters were US Customs and Border Protection (ICE) officers. Portland Police Chief Bob Day asked the public to remain calm: “We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling over the shooting in Minneapolis, but I ask the public to remain calm as we work to learn more.”

The two victims are married couples, reported the US broadcaster CNN. The husband was wounded in the arm and the wife was shot in the chest.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement on Platform X. According to this, border guards stopped a vehicle at 2:19 a.m. local time in which they suspected an illegal immigrant. According to DHS, he is believed to be involved in a prostitution ring and was recently involved in a shooting. He is also a member of a Venezuelan gang.

“When officers identified themselves, the man used his weapon and tried to drive around them,” it says on X. The officers then opened fire, wrote DHS Deputy Secretary Tricia McLaughlin on X. The couple initially drove away.

Six minutes after arriving at the scene, police were informed that two people with gunshot wounds had asked for help about two miles northeast. Officers applied pressure bandages to both before they were taken to a hospital.
