There was a collision on the Mediterranean, in which a US aircraft carrier was significantly damaged. How exactly this came about is not certain.
The aircraft carrier Uss Harry S. Truman suffered visible damage in a collision in the Mediterranean. According to the US Navy, the outer wall of two storage rooms, a maintenance area and platform are affected for the attachment of mooring lines. The rear deck was also damaged.
The aircraft carrier reached a port in Souda Bay, Greece on Sunday, to do emergency repairs, as the command of the US Naval Forces Europe Africa announced. The damage is therefore concentrated on the right rear area of the ship, the so-called taxboard egg area. However, an aircraft elevator nearby remained intact and is still operational.
The incident occurred last Wednesday near Port Said, Egypt when the USS Harry S. Truman was in the eastern Mediterranean. According to the 2nd US fleet, the sponsor had been stationed for combat missions in the area of responsibility of the US Central Command for about two months.
An investigation into the cause of the collision is underway. A marine representative said CBS News on Thursday that it was not yet clear which ship had caused the collision. There were no injuries in the incident.
