Talks in the Persian Gulf about an end to the Russian war in Ukraine are taking place largely in silence. However, all sides are hopeful about a rapprochement in the conflict.

The second day of US-mediated negotiations between Russians and Ukrainians to end the war has begun in the United Arab Emirates. “We are working in the same format as yesterday: trilateral consultations, group work and further convergence of positions,” wrote Ukrainian chief negotiator Rustem Umjerov on Telegram at the start of the second day of negotiations. Results would be announced later, he also said.

Meanwhile, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriyev, said on state television that progress was being made. “There is a good, positive movement forward,” he said.

The second round of negotiations to end the Ukraine war ordered by Putin four years ago is currently underway in Abu Dhabi. The first round took place on 23/24 after months of radio silence between Moscow and Kyiv. January. It ended without any tangible results, although all sides – in addition to the two warring parties as well as the USA as mediator – emphasized significant progress. According to reports, a partial ceasefire later announced by US President Donald Trump was also agreed upon there, which gave Ukraine a break from the air attacks for at least a few days.
