There is a fire in a substation near Moscow – and the power supply collapses.

In the Moscow region, more than 100,000 people lost power after a fire at a substation. Russian media reports that up to 600,000 people are affected. According to a statement from the Ramenskoye city administration, the cause is a cable fire. However, a major Ukrainian drone attack was reported in the region at the same time. Residents of the cities of Zhukovsky and Lytkarino are also affected by the power outage. The city administration promised that the damage would be repaired quickly.

In the evening, the Russian military reported shooting down more than 100 Ukrainian drones within four hours. The majority of them were intercepted in the western Russian region of Bryansk on the border with Ukraine, but eight drones were also intercepted over the Moscow area. The military said three of them were heading towards the capital. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin later reported that additional unmanned aerial vehicles had been intercepted. Because of the drone attacks, Moscow airports also had to temporarily stop operations.

Since the start of the war ordered by Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin at the beginning of 2022, Russia has been systematically bombarding its neighbor’s hinterland with drones, rockets and cruise missiles. But Ukraine is now also attacking objects – primarily in the oil and gas industry – far behind the Russian border. The aim is to make it more difficult to supply the Russian army with fuel and finance the war. However, the damage is incomparable to the extent of the destruction and the number of victims caused by Russian attacks in Ukraine.
