The US government’s hard approach to migrants also meets its own citizens-recently even a two-year-old girl. A judge loudly expresses his concerns.
The US government deported a two-year-old US citizen to Honduras together with her mother and sister on Friday. Federal judge Terry A. Doughty criticized that the deportation had taken place without “appropriate procedures”. The judge of a district court in Louisiana even went one step further: he described the decision in a letter as unconstitutional.
As “Politico” and “New York Times”, citing the court documents, the two -year -old, her mother and her older sister were arrested on Tuesday during an appointment with the immigration authority. On Friday they were deported to Honduras in a quick procedure, the country of birth of the mother and the older sister.
According to ICE, the mother explained that she wanted to take her two -year -old daughter to Honduras. As Doughhty writes, there was no way for the courts to confirm this fact in a conversation with the mother. The Trump government’s lawyers only presented a handwritten note that is supposed to come from the mother.
On Thursday, a petition of the child’s guardian was brought in after the father campaigned for his daughter not to be deported – but without any result. According to the petition, he was prevented from giving the mother of his child’s number of a lawyer.
Doughhty insists on a negotiation and has set a hearing for May 16. The judge wanted to speak to the mother on Friday – however, the three had already left the country at the time. As lawyers from the Trump government announced, there could be no conversation.
As “Politico” writes, the clear criticism of Terry Doughty was surprisingly: In the past, he had made a name for himself with decisions that corresponded to the Trump government-which should have led to some conservative specially filed with him because it calculated with a positive outcome for her.
The Trump government has been strictly against migrants since the inauguration. In the past few weeks, the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia had made headlines, which was incorrectly deported to a prison in El Salvador. However, the US government does not work for its release. Critics complain that the migration authorities have been pursuing a tough course with sometimes overwhelmed decisions since US President Donald Trump took office-despite doubts about the legality of deportations. The plans are partially thwarted by the judiciary. Finally, for example, the US Supreme Court initially stopped the deportation of dozens of Venezuelans.
