“Trump’s darkest plan of all yet”

Donald Trump trolls his audience in Davos. At least that’s how those who were there feel. But the deeper message behind his rambling speech is causing great concern.
After Trump’s highly anticipated speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the comments from the international press were devastating. Reactions range from Trump as a dangerous imperialist to the USA as a rogue state.
“The Standard” (Austria):
“The almost two hours in which only Donald Trump’s voice was heard in Davos showed in a ruthlessly painful way how little substance there is behind the mask. Lies, falsification of history, a twisting of the past – the only recognizable central theme among increasingly confused anecdotes, stories and repetitions is Greenland. (…)
Trump wanders along, touching everything and nothing. He created everything. He blames heads of state. Daddy, King, God. Self-aggrandizement through humiliation of the rest of the world. A deeply offended narcissist stands at the lectern. (…)
Davos, high in the Swiss mountains, will go down in history as the nadir of American foreign policy and diplomacy. The desire for destruction, but also the self-abandonment of the United States, to which we once looked up, cannot be made clearer.”
“But beyond the incendiary rhetoric, the US president delivered a deeper message on Wednesday that was only ostensibly aimed at uniting the West, but instead sought to divide it. It was Trump’s darkest, most insidious and sinister plan of all to date.
Yes, we may have our internal disputes, said the US President, but I approach it with loving severity because we are all in this together. We are the standard bearers of Western civilization. We must resist the barbaric hordes. We must save the white man. (…)
Trump’s speech clearly bore the hallmarks of Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff and architect of his draconian immigration policies. It was consistent with the entire discourse of white identity politics simmering on the American right. (…)
Trump’s far-right allies have been concerned for some time that he is too focused on global conquest plans – Iran, Venezuela, Greenland – and is losing sight of his ‘America first’ credo. On Wednesday he was aimed at the wealthy elite in Davos, but as always his real target group was the audience at home. The message: I am still the great white hope.”
“Donald Trump is a complete professional. Maybe not as a politician. But certainly as an entertainer. The US President meets with leading figures from politics and business in Davos – and snubs almost everyone present. Truth and fiction mixed together in his long, highly anticipated speech. It was entertaining and not without humor – but above all frightening, after all, he is the man in the most powerful position in the world.”
