In an interview, Trump confirmed key points of what he described as an agreement that was well advanced. At the same time, he is threatening Iran with new attacks if negotiations fail.
According to his own words, US President Donald Trump sees the US on the verge of reaching an agreement with Iran to end the conflict. According to a transcript of a telephone interview, Trump told the US broadcaster PBS that they were “very close.” An agreement could possibly be reached before his trip to China planned for next week. If there is no deal, we will have to start “bombing the shit out of” Iran again, Trump said.
In the interview, Trump also confirmed several points of a possible agreement that had previously been reported unanimously by the Wall Street Journal, CNN and the news portal Axios. This stipulates that Iran should hand over its highly enriched uranium to the USA. Asked whether the material might be brought to the United States, Trump replied: “No, not maybe. It’s going to the United States.”
Trump also confirmed that Iran should promise not to operate underground nuclear facilities as part of the agreement. The Wall Street Journal reported, citing an Iranian official, that a long-term moratorium on Iranian uranium enrichment was planned. According to one proposal, Iran may then enrich uranium again to 3.67 percent purity. According to Trump, however, the latter is not part of the agreement.
According to consistent US media reports, Washington and Tehran are working with mediators on a unilateral 14-point memorandum of understanding. The paper is intended to create a framework for negotiations that will initially last 30 days and formally end the war. A relaxation of US sanctions and agreements on the future of the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran recently severely restricted shipping traffic and the US set up a blockade against Iranian ports, are also being discussed.
