Trump’s controversial deportation policy is tightening: plans to relocate migrants, including Germans, cause a stir.

Since Trump is apparently not going fast enough all over the country, his administration is now preparing the next drastic step. According to reports from the “Washington Post”, the US government plans to move thousands of migrants to the notorious prison camp Guantánamo, where they should wait for their deportation. Accordingly, there are also numerous Europeans among those affected – including French people, Italians and national other countries, also Germans.

From discussions of the “Washington Post” with government officials who are familiar with the process, it shows that the Trump administration apparently does not plan to inform the governments concerned about the relocations in advance. The Guantánamo camp is located on a US military base in Cuba and is particularly notorious for its use of the terrorist attacks of September 11 as a torture prison for alleged terrorists.

There is currently no reliable information about the exact scope of the planned operation. In preparation, however, around 9,000 people were ordered to examine medically to determine whether they are suitable for relocation to Guantánamo. It is unclear whether there are enough capacities for everyone.

In January, Trump announced that they wanted to bring up to 30,000 migrants to the prison camp. According to current statements, including the deputy head of the White House, at least 3,000 arrests by the ICE immigration authority are striving for under Trump’s leadership. Their leader, Tom Homan, also makes headlines with similarly drastic statements.

If the Trump government actually begins with relocations to Guantánamo on a large scale, this should cause violent criticism of international partners-especially if its own citizens would also be affected.

At the beginning of the year, the US military had built an additional tent camp with an estimated capacity of over 3,000 people at the base. However, since there has been no major relocation, the tents have been dismantled again in the course of spring – without ever being used.
