“Very smart”: Trump praises the EU’s answer to tariffs

The European Union has suspended the agreed counter tariffs in the trade conflict with the United States – and receives praise from Washington. US President Donald Trump described the decision as “smart”. At a cabinet meeting in the US capital, he said: “This move is very smart.”
Trump had previously announced a 90-day “break” in the customs dispute with the EU and other partner countries. The EU-tower tariffs already decided were then also suspended for 90 days. According to Trump, the EU was “ready for retaliation”. However, it was then held back after the United States’ hard procedure against China had become clear.

While many exports from the EU are temporarily occupied with a reduced minimum customs rate of ten percent, the burden for other products remains high. US tariffs of 25 percent continue to apply to steel, aluminum and cars. For Chinese goods, the White House has increased the duty to 145 percent. Trump justified this step with the Chinese counter -tariffs
When asked whether the USA will see the EU as a whole or as individual states in future discussions, Trump replied: “We see it as a block.” At the same time, he renewed his criticism of the European Union. This was “only founded to take advantage of the United States,” said the President.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had justified the decision to suspend the EU tenderes that there was now room for negotiations.
