President Castro is accused of not having done enough for the poor. She is also accused of failing to combat corruption and the escalating drug trade in the Central American country.
Honduran election officials, meanwhile, blame protesters for the current gridlock. “Our civil servants cannot come to work,” said Electoral Council President Ana Paola Hall on Tuesday evening. She also said there was no legal basis for a full recount of all votes unless there was concrete evidence of irregularities.
The electoral council has until December 30th to announce the winner. Key international election observers have expressed concern about the delayed vote counting but have reported no evidence of systematic fraud.
