Donald Trump welcomes Liberia’s president and is surprising about his good English. The US President then learns more on request.

US President Donald Trump sailed in the White House in Washington on Wednesday in the praise of a group of African heads of state. Many of the guests spoke a different language. Then Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai took the microphone and spoke praising words about the United States and his hosts. Boakai talked in English, the official language of his country.

Trump was impressed and said: “So good English. (…) Where did you learn to speak so nicely?” Boakai seemed to be chuckling. “In Liberia?” Asked Trump. “Yes, sir,” said Boakai. “It’s very interesting,” said Trump. “I have people at this table who cannot speak nearly as well.”

English is the official language of Liberia, although several indigenous languages are also spoken. Liberia was founded in 1822 as a colony for free black Americans. The idea came from white Americans who tried to solve a problem they saw: the future of blacks in the USA after the end of slavery.
