US President Trump supports the mass protests in Iran. He threatens the government if demonstrators are executed. He also commented on the number of victims in Iran.
US President Donald Trump has threatened the government of Iran with decisive intervention by the United States if Tehran executes arrested demonstrators. “We will react very harshly,” the Republican told the TV station CBS News in Detroit. “If they do that, we will act very decisively.” When asked by the moderator, Trump did not provide any further details about what steps the US government was considering. “The goal is to win. I like to win. And we win,” Trump continued.
A few hours earlier, Trump had already pledged his support to the demonstrators in Iran in view of the ongoing mass protests. Since the protests against the Islamic Republic’s authoritarian system of rule began a good two weeks ago, Trump has repeatedly threatened Iran with US intervention if demonstrators were killed.
In the CBS interview, Trump said there were different reports on the number of protesters killed in the crackdown on protests. “But it looks like it could be quite a significant number. And that will mean a lot of problems for them,” he said, referring to the leadership in Tehran.
The protests sparked by an economic crisis have developed into a nationwide uprising. There were violent riots and serious unrest in cities. The security apparatus reacts with brutal severity. According to activists, hundreds of demonstrators have already been killed. These are the most serious protests in Iran in years.
The judiciary has already initiated the first charges against arrested demonstrators. There is also the accusation of “waging war against God” – an offense that can be punished with the death penalty under Islamic law in Iran. Last week, the judiciary announced “maximum severity” in dealing with demonstrators. In previous waves of protests, it also imposed death sentences.
