Donald Trump has initiated a radical change of course with a view to the Ukraine War. He brings Russia out of isolation – and instead shares against the Ukrainian leadership.

US President Donald Trump has practically blamed Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj that the Russian war of attack against his country has been ongoing for three years. There is “a lead in Ukraine that has admitted a war that could never have been existed,” said Trump when he appeared in his estate Mar-A-Lago in the state of Florida. With a view of Selenskyj, he said: “I like him personally, he’s fine.” But it is not about personal sympathy, but about “the job is done”.

On criticism from Ukraine that the country had not been invited to a meeting between United States and Russia in Saudi Arabia, Trump reacted mockingly. “I heard today: Oh, we weren’t invited,” said the Republican – and pushed after: “Well, you have been there for three years.” The war should have ended long ago that the Ukrainians were almost to blame: “You should never have started. You could have done a deal.”

Ukraine is dependent on the Russian invasion of western help when defending. Under Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden, the USA was the most important supporter and arms supplier of the country. Due to the change of power in Washington, the Ukrainians now fear a drastic change of course in favor of Russia.

Shortly after taking office, Trump personally contacted Russian President Vladimir Putin, who ordered the war in February 2022, and will soon make him personally. The two agreed talks for a possible peace agreement. The foreign ministers of both countries met in Saudi Arabia to prepare. Ukraine and the European allies have so far been out of the outside with Trump’s alone.

At his appearance, Trump also claimed that he could have negotiated a deal for Ukraine. After that they would have got “almost the whole country”, “and no people would have been killed and no city would have been destroyed”. What exactly he meant remained open.

In addition, the US President directed the same reminder as Moscow on Kiev: elections are necessary in Ukraine. There would have been no elections there for a long time, and war law continues to apply, complained Trump. That doesn’t just say Russia. Trump criticized that Selenskyj has low approval values. The country is largely destroyed, people are fed up with the war.

Surveys also show after three years of Russian invasion that there are still more than half of the Ukrainians behind President Selenskyj. There is also a majority against regional detections and other concessions towards Russia. However, the proportion of those who want an end to the war on negotiations and compromises increases. Regardless of this, there is worry that Russia could manipulate elections in the neighboring country and thus ensure that a puppet government that the Kremlin could take over in Kiev could take over.

Russia argues that Selenskyj’s term of office had expired in May last year and that new elections would be necessary in Ukraine. This is questioned by Selenskyj’s legitimacy. Kiev, on the other hand, emphasizes that the presidents’ powers of attorney were further into force through the applicable law law.
