Many Canadians like to hibernate in the southern states of the United States. So far they have been able to do that without any problems. Now the US government is tightening the rules.
Against the background of the tensions between the USA and Canada, the US government has tightened the entry requirements for citizens from northern neighboring country. As can be seen from a message in the official gazette of the US federal government, Canadian citizens must register officially when a stay of more than 30 days in the USA from April 11th.
In the future, this will now also be applied to Canadians, which already applies to the citizens of other countries. According to the Ministry of the Interior, between 2.2 and 3.2 million people may be affected by the tightening. Among them are an estimated 900,000 Canadians who hibernate in US south states such as Florida, Texas or South Carolina every year-and are colloquially referred to as “snowbirds”.
The traditional friendly relationship between the USA and Canada has worsened massively since US President Donald Trump took office. On Wednesday, Trump imposed global 25 percent punitive tariffs on the import of steel and aluminum-the Canada should hit particularly hard. Previously, he had already imposed import duties of 25 percent on other Canadian goods.
Trump has been expressing the threat for weeks that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States. North of the border, many citizens see this as a serious threat – among them Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his designated successor Mark Carney.
