Government business in the USA has been at a standstill for weeks. This is also due to a procedural rule for votes in the Senate that is more than 100 years old. Trump now wants to overturn this.
US President Donald Trump has called for the abolition of the so-called filibuster rule in view of the ongoing shutdown in the USA. This procedure allows a minority in the US Senate to block many bills passed by the majority. “ABOLISH THE FILIBUSTER AND MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN,” Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform.
The filibuster is a more than 100-year-old rule that states that for many bills, 60 of the 100 senators must agree to end the debate in order for a vote in the chamber of Congress to occur.
The Republicans currently have a majority in the Senate with 53 seats – but in order for a project to actually be passed, they are dependent on the support of at least seven Democrats. The Democrats are aware of their position and are demanding concessions from Trump’s party in return for their votes.
The shutdown in the USA has been going on for more than four weeks, with no end in sight. Because Democrats and Republicans in the US Congress cannot agree on a federal budget, there is no basis for further financing. As a result, many state authorities and institutions had to close or severely limit their work.
