Trump meets Putin in Alaska – but where?

US President Trump meets Russia’s head of state Putin in Alaska. Many hotels are available. Or a very unusual place, as was the case with Pope John Paul II.

Donald Trump does not have his own golf hotels in Alaska. It is all the more puzzled where the US President meets the Russian head of state Vladimir Putin on Friday.

So far, the White House has only confirmed Alaska as a place of meeting. Alaska does not have many airports on which the presidential machine Air Force 1 can land. The US Air Traffic Agency restricted air traffic around Anchorage for Friday. It is believed that the meeting of Trump and Putin in Alaska’s largest city increases.

The newspaper “Anchorage Daily News” therefore speculates that the summit in the Hotel Captain Cook could take place in Anchorage. China’s head of state XI Jinping had already dined there in 2017. The staff would be familiar with the security conditions.

The newspaper “Alaska’s News Source” puts the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood into conversation, around sixty kilometers from Anchorage. Hotel employees did not want to comment on possible prominent guests.

About the facts: Before traveling by heads of state and government, a security team from the capital usually starts to discuss the security measures in the hotel and check the situation. Special rules apply to US presidents. If the president moves, whether in the car or on foot, everything else stops. Not only the traffic is resting. Journalists also have to endure in the press room until the president has left the building.

Former US agent Robert McDonald explained the “Alaska’s News Source”: “I think you will search for event locations that can absorb a certain number of people from each of the countries and have lounges, overnight rooms and areas in which people can be cared for.”

Alaska as a summit location therefore offers an advantage. The remote place is difficult to reach for possible counter -demonstrators.

Alaska has experience with state guests. Not only China’s XI was in the US state in 2017. In 1984 President Reagan met Pope John Paul II – not by the way in a hotel, but at the airport.
