In Greenland, opposition leader Pele Broberg has called for direct talks with the US, bypassing Denmark, following US President Donald Trump’s move to take control of the island. “We encourage our government to have a dialogue with the US government without Denmark,” said the head of the largest opposition party, Naleraq. With its mediation, Denmark is angering both Greenland and the USA. Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt immediately rejected the demand, saying it was not legally permissible. “We have to respect the law and we have rules on how problems are solved in the kingdom,” she told the Sermitsiaq newspaper.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wants to meet with the Danish Foreign Minister next week. Motzfeldt said she hopes the meeting will be
lead to a normalization of relationships. NATO ambassadors in Brussels discussed the issue on Thursday and, according to insiders, agreed that the alliance must strengthen security in the Arctic. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc would respond if US plans become more concrete. “The messages we are hearing are extremely worrying,” she added.
The background is Trump’s recent threats to take control of Greenland
to take over. He is taking up an idea that he had already expressed in 2019 during his first term in office. The island is strategically located between Europe and North America and is rich in natural resources, which suits Washington’s goal of reducing dependence on China.
