If it later turns out that you have injured yourself so badly that you are unable to work for longer than just the day of the accident, you must see a so-called transit doctor (D-doctor). These are usually specialists in orthopedics and trauma surgery. You can find one on the website of the German Statutory Accident Insurance (DGUV). databasewhere you can search for a D doctor near you. If you have already been treated by your family doctor, he or she will refer you to a D-doctor.
Good to know: If you have an injury to your eyes, ear, nose or throat, you should immediately consult an ophthalmologist or ENT doctor. These are automatically considered D-doctors. The same applies to dentists.
The D doctor decides how you will be treated and writes a report for the statutory accident insurance. You must also see him if you are not able to work for longer than the day of the accident, but the medical treatment is expected to take longer than a week or you need to use medical and medical aids.
The benefits of statutory accident insurance are generally more extensive than those of statutory health insurance. While the health insurance company only has to ensure that you are treated adequately and appropriately in the event of a private accident, the statutory accident insurance must use “all appropriate means” to get you fit again.
For example, it covers the entire treatment and rehabilitation costs – no matter how high they are. You will also not have to pay any additional payments for medication or for inpatient stays in the hospital. You do not have to show your health insurance card during treatment. This applies to both legally and privately insured people. And: The accident insurance pays the so-called injury benefit in the event of commuting accidents.
You will then receive 80 percent of your gross salary, up to a maximum of your lost net earnings. This means that the injury benefit is higher than the sickness benefit, where you would receive 70 percent of your gross salary, but a maximum of 90 percent of the net salary that you lost. You can read more about sick pay here. You do not have to apply for injury benefit or other accident insurance benefits. The provider grants this automatically based on the medical documents.
