Every employee who is subject to social insurance contributions in Germany receives proof of their insurance number. What data does it contain? How do you apply for it?

The insurance number proof (social security card) contains the social security number, which is unique for everyone. The ID card is issued by the relevant pension insurance provider upon entry into working life and sent to the insured person. What the social security number means and what other data is on this important insurance document.

These institutions apply for proof of insurance number, formerly a social security card, for you and it is then automatically sent to you by the pension insurance company. This usually takes up to four weeks. The ID contains all important information such as name, pension insurance provider and social security number for clear identification.

On the one hand, the ID card certifies membership in the social security system and, on the other hand, is intended to prevent undeclared work and the unauthorized receipt of social benefits, as the Techniker Krankenkasse explains.

After you have received your ID card, it is best to check the following information immediately:

A passport photo is no longer required as proof of insurance number.

Although proof of insurance number is in principle a valid identification document, you do not have to carry it with you at all times. The so-called carrying requirement, which in the past applied to employees who worked in certain industries, for example in the construction industry or the meat industry, no longer exists since 2009.

When changing employers, it is not necessary to apply for a new ID card; you simply need to present the document to the new employer so that they can transfer the social security contributions to the correct customer account. These are the employer and employee contributions for statutory unemployment and pension insurance as well as contributions to health insurance.

You will also need ID if you apply for social benefits, such as unemployment benefits.

If you lose the document or the ID card has become unusable, you must apply for a new insurance number from your local health insurance company. This will then be sent to you. If you still have or can find your old social security card or proof of insurance number, you must also hand it in there.
