Thailand and Cambodia have been fighting on their border for days. Now there should be conversations with the participation of the USA and China. Is there a breakthrough?
Shortly before a meeting of the heads of government in Thailand and Cambodia in Malaysia, international pressure on the parties to the conflict is growing. It is about “reaching an immediate ceasefire”, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on X. There were heavy fights on the border between the two neighboring countries on Thursday. There are deaths and injuries on both sides, tens of thousands of people are on the run. Heavy battles have been reported again since the night.
Representatives of the US State Department are on site in Malaysia to support peace efforts, Rubio continued. Both US President Donald Trump and he himself were in contact with the respective counterparts in both countries and observed the situation very precisely. “We want this conflict to end as soon as possible,” emphasized Rubio. Both sides have accused the violence since the beginning of the battles. Trump said in front of journalists on Sunday that both countries absolutely wanted to reach an agreement.
The meeting between Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s transitional Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is scheduled to take place in the afternoon (local time) in Putrajaya. Malaysia is the chair of the Southeast Asian community of Asean this year. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had spoken to his counterpart from Thailand and Cambodia shortly after the fights began and offered themselves as an intermediary.
Both sides confirmed that representatives of China also take part in the meeting. Hun Manet wrote on Facebook: “I will lead the Cambodian delegation to a special meeting in Kuala Lumpur, which is organized by Malaysia and co -organized by the USA, with China’s participation.”
Trump had already phoned both heads of the government on Saturday and then wrote on the Truth Social platform: “They agreed to meet immediately and quickly work out peace and ultimately peace!” He added that there would be no negotiations regarding his threatened tariffs as long as both states fought. Trump had previously announced that they wanted to prove the two countries with tariffs of 36 percent in early August.
Meanwhile, the number of Cambodian living in Thailand increases, who want to go back home packed with their belongings. From the Ministry of Defense in Phnom Penh it was said that more than 400,000 migrant workers had already crossed the border because they no longer felt safe in Thailand.
Meanwhile, Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn canceled the official celebrations on the occasion of his 73rd birthday, as the broadcaster Thai PBS reported. The celebrations should last until Tuesday. The decision was made because “the government, the military and all areas of society, given the continuing border conflicts, have to concentrate their efforts to protect national sovereignty, the defense of the country and the security of the population,” it said.
