Israel speaks of Netanyahu meeting with Lebanon’s head of state Aoun

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will speak with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, according to a member of his security cabinet. Minister of Science and Technology Gila Gamliel makes this announcement on Army Radio. However, a Lebanon representative told Reuters that the Lebanese government had no information about imminent contact.

US President Donald Trump had previously spoken of direct negotiations. Parallel to the attacks on Iran, Israel launched an offensive against the radical Islamic Hamas in Lebanon. As part of its discussions with Iran about ending the war, the USA is also pushing for an end to the offensive in Lebanon.

Iran: Progress in talks with the USA

Iran and the United States are making some progress in their efforts to reach an agreement to end the conflict, according to a senior Iranian official. However, more than halfway through a two-week ceasefire, major disagreements remain, including over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, the insider says. A visit by the Pakistani army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, to Tehran helped to reduce the differences on some points. This fuels hopes of an extension of the ceasefire and new talks between Tehran and Washington.

Trump surprises with announcement of top meetings

Israel and Lebanon will speak at the highest level today, according to US President Donald Trump. The “leaders” of the two countries have not spoken to each other for a long time, probably 34 years, the Republican wrote on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday evening (local time) and added: “Tomorrow (Thursday) it will happen. Fine!” The background is the ongoing war between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia.

It is not clear from his post who exactly Trump means by the leaders of both countries. Lebanon’s Prime Minister is Nawaf Salam, his Israeli counterpart is Benjamin Netanyahu. The presidents of both countries are Joseph Aoun and Izchak Herzog. It’s about trying to “create some air between Israel and Lebanon,” Trump wrote. Representatives of both states met in Washington on Tuesday evening for the first time in decades for direct talks at the political level.

Lebanese government circles said this morning that they had only found out about the planned conversation from the media. Media reported a possible telephone conversation. There was initially no official confirmation from the government.

Federal government approved arms exports to Israel

The federal government also approved arms exports to Israel in the first weeks of the Iran war – albeit on a relatively small scale. From February 28th, the day of the attack on Iran by Israeli and US forces, until March 27th, the black-red government gave its approval for exports worth 6.6 million euros, according to answers from the Federal Ministry of Economics to several questions from left-wing MP Ulrich Thoden, which are available to the German Press Agency.
