In the time of the Assad regime, the EU imposed sharp sanctions against Syria. Part of it should now be lifted again.
Around half a year after the fall of long-term rulers Bashar al-Assad, the foreign ministers of the EU countries decided to fully abolish economic sanctions against Syria. This was announced by EU chief diplomat Kaja Kallas in Brussels.
According to the information, the sanctions primarily concern the Syrian banking system, which has so far had no access to the international capital market. However, sanctions against members of the fallen government by ex-power holder Bashar al-Assad and weapon embargos should remain in force.
The Islamist HTS militia cited by transition head of state Ahmed al-Schaara and allied groups had overthrew Assad after more than 13 years of civil war in December. The HTS is an earlier branch from Al Qaeda, but had long since removed from the terror network. Former jihadist Al-Schaara has been trying for a more moderate image since taking office.
At the end of February, the EU had already partially suspended its punitive measures against the country. US President Donald Trump announced the lifting of long-term US sanctions against Syria last week.
