U.S. punitive tariffs could be difficult for American carmakers. Tesla has now warned the US government in a letter.
The US car maker Tesla warns of possible retaliation tariffs against the electric car maker in response to the policy of US President Donald Trump. “US exporters are naturally exposed to disproportionate effects when other countries react to US trade measures,” Tesla writes to the US trade officer’s office. According to the Reuters news agency, the letter has the company’s logo, but no signature. Tesla is managed by Elon Musk, who also acts as a consultant of the US President and should help to massively reduce government spending
The letter explains what effects the trade dispute has on the American car manufacturer. “For example, previous US trade measures have led to immediate reactions of the affected countries, including increased tariffs imported electric vehicles imported into these countries.” As an American manufacturer and exporter, Tesla calls on the trade officer to take into account the downstream effects of certain proposed measures to combat unfair trading practices.
Tesla also warned that “certain parts and components in the United States are difficult or not at all to be obtained”. The car manufacturer added that companies will “benefit from a gradual approach that enables them to prepare accordingly and to ensure that suitable measures are taken for the supply chain and compliance with the regulations”. This should try to achieve Tesla at least a shift in tariffs. It was only on Wednesday that Donald Trump presented a red Tesla in front of the White House that he had bought. Elon Musk was also present at the press appointment.
Other car manufacturers in the USA are also concerned: cars Drive America, a trading group that represents large foreign automobile manufacturers, including Toyota, Volkswagen, BMW, Honda and Hyundai, warned the Ustr Commercial Authority in separate comments that the introduction of “broad-based tariffs will disturb production in the US assembly plants”.
Trump is considering raising considerable tariffs on vehicles and parts from all over the world at the beginning of April. Tesla did not react immediately to the request of Reuters for a comment.
