Iranian media had previously reported major differences in negotiations with the USA. The talks are now to be continued under the mediation of Pakistan.

Talks between the USA and Iran, mediated by Pakistan, are scheduled to continue this Sunday. The Iranian news agencies Tasnim, Fars and Irna reported this unanimously during the night. Around 14 hours after the start of the meeting in the Pakistani capital Islamabad, a direct round of negotiations ended in the early hours of the morning. According to the information, teams of experts should now exchange further negotiating texts. From the USA, a high-ranking official in the White House said that the talks continued after 15 hours.

Iranian media had previously reported major differences in negotiations with the USA. The news agencies Tasnim and Fars spoke of “excessive demands” from the US side. Specifically, the Strait of Hormuz was named as a central point of contention. From the Iranian point of view, this hindered the progress of the negotiations.

According to Tasnim, the Iranian delegation insists on “preserving military achievements,” a possible reference to the Islamic Republic’s missile program. However, according to both reports, the biggest dispute is over questions about the Strait of Hormuz.

The strait connects the Persian Gulf with the Indian Ocean and thus the region’s major oil producing countries with world markets. Iran has seized control of the sea lane since the war began. US President Donald Trump made their opening a condition for the two-week ceasefire announced last Wednesday.
