During their first rule, the Taliban regularly executed people in stadiums. Now such a case is becoming known again.

The radical Islamic Taliban ruling Afghanistan has publicly executed a man convicted of murder. The man was executed in front of a crowd at a sports stadium in the western city of Kala-I-Naw, the Supreme Court said on Thursday. This brings the number of public executions in Afghanistan to eleven since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. The man was shot dead by a relative of the victims in front of thousands of spectators.

The court said the man was sentenced to a “retaliatory punishment” for the murder of a man and a woman. His case had previously been “examined very carefully and repeatedly.” The victims’ families rejected the man’s pardon. The execution was publicly announced on Wednesday and the public was invited to attend.

All execution orders must be personally signed by Taliban leader Haibatullah Achundsada. A good year after the Taliban returned to power, Akhundzada called on the country’s judges to fully implement Islamic law and its catalog of punishments. These include public executions, stonings and floggings, as well as amputation of limbs for thieves. During the Taliban’s first rule between 1996 and 2001, there were numerous public executions in Afghanistan, most of them in stadiums.
