The US President often flies from an airport in Maryland for his trips at home and abroad. This now had to be partially evacuated due to an incident.
A suspicious package containing white powder has caused unrest at the military air base used by US President Donald Trump. After the package was opened at Joint Base Andrews near Washington, seven people had to be temporarily treated in hospital, US media reported on Friday. Some of them complained of headaches, according to Fox News. What exactly the powder was about was initially unclear.
CNN reported, citing military sources, that the package contained an unknown white powder and “political propaganda material.” According to the military base, special investigators were looking into the case.
“Joint Base Andrews responded today to an incident where an individual opened a suspicious package,” the base said Thursday. “As a precaution, the building and the adjacent building were evacuated.” First responders identified “no immediate threat” and referred the case to the Office of Special Investigations.
Joint Base Andrews is located around 30 minutes by car from the White House in the US state of Maryland. It is often used by Trump and other high-ranking members of the government for flights. Trump only landed there on Wednesday after returning from an economic conference in the US state of Florida. On Friday he wanted to leave there again and fly to his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida.
