Countless bicycles are stolen every year. Well, if an insurance company bears the loss – but which is good? The Stiftung Warentest gives tips.

Moment with horror: You want to complete your bike, but it is gone – theft. In 2024 alone, 245,868 stolen bicycles were reported. The police were able to solve only about every tenth, reports “Stiftung Warentest Finance” in the latest edition (issue 6/2025). Insurance can compensate for the damage.

But which one for whom is the right one depends on various factors. About the value of the bike. Do I only drive occasionally or daily? Where do I live? Anyone who lives in a place with a low theft rate and has a small value with little value may also be able to cope without insurance.

“Stiftung Warentest Finance” tested a total of 119 tariffs from 44 insurers who secure at least theft. 36 tariffs alone cut “very good”. For example, in the case of pure theft insurance, the judgments of “very good” (5 times), “good” (7) and “satisfactory” (8) to “sufficient” (3).

With “very good” the “theft protection”, called “theft protection”, were rated by Huk Coburg, Huk24 and VRK. Signal Iduna “Bicycle theft (package S)” and Andsafe “Theft, protection letter” received the same judgment.

The tariff “Bicycle theft (package S)” The Signal Iduna, for example, is just as inexpensive in cities with high risk-in the Test Berlin and Göttingen-as inexpensive as in the city of Remscheid with low risk. In relation to a trekking bike for 1,500 euros, the policy costs 32 euros each year. The policy costs 50 euros for an e-cargo bike, which costs around 6,000 euros, and 38 euros each for an e-city wheel (3,000 euros).

The “Theft Protection” tariff of the HUK24 is very cheap in the Remscheid low-risk area for the Trekkingrad (25 euros), but expensive in the aforementioned Klau-strongholds (37 euros in Göttingen, 101 euros in Berlin).

At the truck insurance tested, 31 policies alone receive the judgment “very good”. Depending on the city and insured wheel, offers also start at 32 euros and go to 655 euros for the e-cargo bike as an example in Berlin.
