Iran wants to break through Israel’s air defense

Iran wants to take action against Israel with a modified medium -range missile. The weapon is said to be able to penetrate the well -known air defense system.

The rocket bears the name Qassem Basir, named after the commander Qassem Soleimani killed by the USA in 2020. Basir is one of the 99 names of Allah, it means “the knowing”.

According to the revolutionary guard in Iran, this weapon is particularly powerful against Israeli air defense and is said to have been used in the night from Sunday to Monday. At least eight people were killed, some reports also speak of more. 200 more people were injured. The attack took place three days after Israel had started a comprehensive air campaign against Iranian nuclear and military facilities, in which several high-ranking civil servants were killed.

Iran considers the weapon to be an important factor in the war. What is known about it.

The Qassem Basir is a modified medium -range missile. It is eleven meters long and seven tons heavy. It should carry up to 500 kilograms of explosives and fly 1,200 to 1,400 kilometers. It can reach speeds of up to Mach 11 (approx. 13,000 kilometers per hour). You should reach the top speed when you re -enter the atmosphere, then plunge to your goal. It is considered hyper -sound.

The new weapon was presented in May. It was said that it had an improved navigation system that made it possible to charge goals more precisely. It should also be able to be produced in masses.

Ballistic rockets are shot up into the atmosphere before they return to their destination in an arc. They are only steered in the initial phase of the start and can therefore be less precise than a cruise missile, but have the advantage that they reach incredibly high speeds when approaching their goal.

Israel denies the impact ability of the Iranian weapon. According to “Times of Israel”, the Iranian rockets would only have limited maneuverability. Army representatives said that similar rockets had already been fired by Iran last year, but would have caused hardly any damage at the time.

In fact, the Israeli army also reported for the first time that its systems had a success rate of 80 to 90 percent when the ballistic rockets were intercepted from Sunday to Monday and penetrated the protective shield five to ten percent and hit them in inhabited area. So far, the defense rate was usually well over 90 percent.

Experts, on the other hand, are more careful. The Israeli space and rocket expert Tal Inbar told the New York Times that there were weapons on some Israeli shots from the weekend that have not yet been used by Iran.
