Moldau had shown Russian diplomats at the beginning of the week. Now Russia is reacting with countermeasures.

Russia ordered three diplomats from Moldau on Friday. The Foreign Ministry in Moscow announced that the decision was made according to the “principle of reciprocity” – Moldau had expelled three Russian diplomats in the country on Monday. The government of the Southeast European country had accused the Russian embassy of helping a Prorse politician to flee shortly before his conviction in a corruption procedure.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the allegations. “Any attempt to accuse the Russian diplomatic mission to interfere with internal matters of the Republic of Moldova lacks any basis,” said the message. In protest against the latest expulsions, the Ministry had ordered the Moldovian ambassador.

The Moldovian politician Alexander Nestovschi had been on trial for corruption and the illegal financing of a party. He was submerged shortly before his conviction. According to the Moldova secret service, Nestovschi had initially entered the Russian message before fled to the Transnistria region, which is renegade by Moldau.

Relations between Moldova and Russia have been extremely tense since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. Both countries have shown dozens of diplomats from the other state in recent years. The government in Chișinău has accused Moscow several times to interfere in the country’s internal affairs and to influence elections, among other things.
