Trump’s ministers and supporters come to praise after the scandal with Selenskyj. A Republican even demands the resignation of the Ukrainian president.

During state visits, appointments in front of reporters and photographers are actually a matter of form. Hands are shaken, smiled into the cameras and two or three questions are answered. Then you withdraw to conversations. Not so when visiting the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj in the White House: Sitting together almost 50 minutes, five minutes of which were a heated discussion until Selenskyj left the meeting. Politicians were outraged in the west, and was cheered in Russia. And in the United States, Trump’s republicans knocked the president on the shoulder.

There were clear words from Lindsey Graham: “What I saw in the Oval Office was disrespectful, and I don’t know if we can ever do business again with Selenskyj.” He called for Selenskyj to change or the Ukraine should “hire someone else”. For Trump and his Vice Vance, he was full of praise. “Someone asked me if I was ashamed of Trump. I was never proud of the president. I was also very proud of JD Vance who was in our country.”

Foreign Minister Marco Rubio, who was present at the meeting, but held back, later wrote to X: “Thank you for putting America in the first place. America is with you.” US Finance Minister Scott Besset wrote on X: “Thank you, President Trump, that you are committed to the American people and our country on the world stage.”

Trump’s security advisor Mike Waltz also called Selenskyj’s behavior “disrespectful” and praised the US President to try for peace. Tammy Bruce, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, left Selenskyj open: “I believe that President Selenskyj may be considering it differently, but he has the chance to turn the sheet, and he should probably do that for his people.”

But Trump does not want to know anything about it for the time being. He excludes an immediate resumption of conversations with the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj. “He wants to come back immediately. But that doesn’t work for me,” said Trump at his first public appearance after the scandal in the Oval Office.
