For ten days, Israeli forces took action against militants in the northern West Bank. The military action in Jenin is now said to be over.
The Israeli army operation against Islamist extremists in Jenin in the northern West Bank has ended, according to a Palestinian media report. Israeli troops withdrew this morning from the town, which is considered a stronghold of militant Palestinians, reported the Palestinian news agency Wafa. They had been deployed there for ten days.
Israel’s army did not immediately confirm the report. Israeli forces are still active in order to achieve the goals of the anti-terror operation, the military said. So far, 14 militants have been killed and more than 30 suspects arrested in Jenin, it said in a statement.
In the past week and a half, Israeli forces have also defused around 30 explosive devices hidden under the road in the area. Among other things, they reportedly destroyed an underground weapons depot under a mosque.
According to the Ministry of Health in Ramallah, 21 people were killed during the operation in the area. According to Palestinian media, there is also severe damage to buildings and roads in the town.
According to Palestinian reports, Israel’s army also withdrew from Tulkarem in the northwest of the West Bank, but there were still some smaller and temporary Israeli army operations elsewhere.
Last week, Israel began a large-scale military operation in several places in the West Bank. The army justified the action with the significantly increased number of attacks on Israelis. The aim was to take action against Hamas and Islamic Jihad. According to the Ministry of Health, a total of 39 people were killed.
The situation in the West Bank has worsened significantly since the start of the Gaza war following the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023. Since then, more than 660 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military operations, confrontations or attacks in the West Bank, according to the Ministry of Health. At the same time, violence by extremist Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank has also increased.
