A student in Tehran caused a stir with a protest: She walked around in front of her university in her underwear until she was arrested.
An Iranian woman provoked the authorities of the mullahs’ regime with an unusual protest and was briefly arrested. In protest against the Basij militia, she stripped down to her underwear in Tehran and walked down the street. Previously, she had apparently been harassed by the militia belonging to the Revolutionary Guard, as activists reported in online services. In protest, the woman, who was studying at the renowned Asad University in Tehran, took off her clothes in front of the school and walked through the street in her underwear, as a video shows.
The video was apparently recorded by residents of a building near the university. It was first published by the Iranian student portal Amir Kabir and later distributed by numerous other websites, including the news site Iran Wire and the site of the human rights group Hengaw.
Further images show the young woman being pushed into a car by men in civilian clothes. According to Amir Kabir, the student, whose identity was not revealed, was beaten during the arrest.
The Iranian branch of Amnesty International demanded on online service X that the authorities must “immediately and unconditionally release” the young woman. The allegations of beatings and sexual violence during her arrest must be investigated independently and impartially, the organization added.
The human rights activist Düzen Tekkal wrote on the LinkedIn platform: “But if the freedom and self-determination of women trigger the regime like this, then the Islamic Republic is a disease. We will closely monitor what happens next with the student, because the truth also includes: that your life is now in danger.” Human rights activist Elica Le Bon praised the action: “This is a courageous form of resistance.” She reported that Iranian authorities assumed the woman had a mental disorder and took her to a hospital.
Iran’s Fars news agency reported the incident and published a blurry photo of the woman. According to state reports, the student wore “inappropriate” clothing in class and exposed herself after being reprimanded by security officers.
Islamic law in Iran imposes a strict dress code on women, requiring them to wear a headscarf and loose, body-covering clothing.
