Romania is in a political limbo after the presidential election was folded in. Now the old president also throws.

Romanian President Klaus Werner Johannis (Romanian Iohannis) has announced his resignation from the head of the state. He announced this in a press release on Monday. He wants to pass a political crisis for which he blames the country’s parliament.

Klaus Iohannis, part of the German minority in the country, has been President of Romania since 2014 and was re -elected in 2019 for a second term. In the presidential election in November 2024, there were irregularities and suspected Russian interference, so that the election was canceled. The repetition of the election is scheduled for May 4, 2025, with a possible runoff election on May 18, 2025.

After the first round of the presidential election was canceled, there had been criticism of the whereabouts of Iohannis in office. Therefore, a procedure for suspending the president was started on Monday. The Romanian president said that this was a “senseless undertaking because I will divorce from office in a few months after the election of the new president”.

The referendum would plunge Romania into a crisis, said Iohannis. He also fears an overschafting of the upcoming presidential elections. “There will be no discussion about how to proceed with Romania. The candidates will not even be able to present their ideas in this negative climate,” said the president.
