Exclusion by enacting: If you want to live your transidentity openly, you should leave the US military – as President Donald Trump wants it. The Pentagon is followed. Human rights groups run storm.

The US Department of Defense largely wants to exclude Transmens from military service-also active soldiers. “The service of these individuals is not in the best interest of the armed forces and not clearly in accordance with the interests of national security,” says a Pentagon reference that was developed by President Donald Trump’s order. The paper came to the public in the course of a lawsuit by LGBTQ groups against the US government as part of court documents. LGBTQ stands for lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans- and queer people.

Trans people do not identify with the gender that was attributed to them at birth. The World Health Organization (WHO) has no longer classified trans- and gender-various identities as a mental illness since 2019 to reflect a modern understanding of gender identity. An earlier guideline of the Pentagon prohibited discrimination based on gender identity.

The new instruction demands that those responsible for the individual branches of the forces identify all persons with a diagnosis or history of “gender dysphoria” within 30 days. These people are then to be excluded and honored by the military – unless “their file justifies” the opposite.

Exceptions are only allowed if those affected serve “immediately of warfare”. They have had to live with the gender as attributed to them for three years, “without clinically significant suffering”, should never have changed their gender and would have to accept the gender -specific regulations of the military.

According to the instruction, the Pentagon recognizes only two genders. Service members have to use salutation such as “Sir” and “Ma” on the “gender attributed to the birth. In addition, gender-accumulating treatments should no longer be financed through military health provision and planned operations are deleted.

Critics see this a discriminatory measure that could weaken the commitment of the troop because experienced soldiers are pushed out of service. Human rights organizations criticize that the decision was not made out of military necessity, but for ideological motives.

Thanks to a change of control under the government of the then US President Barack Obama, people living as trans people have been able to serve in the US military since 2016. However, their exact number in the armed forces is unclear because uniform studies are missing and many do not disclose their identity out of fear of discrimination. However, estimates assume a low single -digit percentage in the active service.

Trump already campaigned for the exclusion of trans people from the military in his first term and now exacerbates the rules again. He claims that the military was “haunted by a radical gender ideology”, and Defense Minister Pete Hegseth commissioned to develop new guidelines. The LGBTQ groups then went to court.
