Macron wrestles for control: After the prime minister has withdrawn, new elections threaten – and a possible benefit for power for Le Pens right national.
With the surprising withdrawal of France’s Premier Sébastien Lecornu, President Emmanuel Macron is under pressure, and the opposition calls again loudly after his resignation. With an unexpected decision, Macron now got air.
The president ordered the premier, whose resignation he had accepted on Monday morning in the Élysée Palace, again in the afternoon. The mandate: Lecornu, which continues to be managing, is said to have talks about a way out of the crisis by Wednesday evening.
Macron has won the time, but no room for maneuver. Because Lecornu has already made it clear that he does not want to continue as a premier, even if he succeeds in the “mission impossible”. Macron must again go in search of a prime minister from Thursday at the latest or dissolve the parliament and give up new elections.
The appointment of a new prime minister does not guarantee political stability. Because neither Macron’s middle alliance nor the left or right camp have a majority in the National Assembly. So far, the formation of a government -capable coalition has not been successful. Since the early parliamentary elections in the summer of 2024, Lecornu has also failed as head of government as head of government.
It is questionable whether a rule with the split parliament succeeds in the fourth attempt. Because no matter which warehouse a future prime minister comes from, he or you quickly threatens a vote of no confidence from the competing blocks. Even if Macron, after two failed center-right governments, would respond to the reputation of socialists and communists to appoint a prime minister from the left warehouse, such a majority in parliament at the moment. France would remain difficult to go and the battered Macron under pressure.
Macron will “take his responsibility” when Lecornus failed last negotiations, it said on Monday evening from the president’s surroundings. Macron had recently excluded a resignation. However, the announcement was interpreted in such a way that Macron then dissolved the parliament and arranged new elections.
It is currently not foreseeable whether a new election creates clear conditions or whether the situation becomes even more process. If a block other than Macron’s center warehouse obtained the absolute majority, Macron would de facto be forced to appoint a prime minister from his ranks. Then there would be a so -called cohabitation. Macron’s power would shrink significantly, the prime minister would be more important.
