Palestine: international lawyers to recognize

Back to the legal question of recognition: Spain recognizes a Palestinian state, but not Kosovo. So it’s about political opportunities. Why do you advocate that Germany should support the anchor recognition of a Palestinian state with its special responsibility for Israel?

Of course, this question is not just about a question of mass – that is, the number of states that take such a step – but also about quality. This is precisely why recognition by the federal government would be so important.

Germany’s reluctance creates frictions within the G7, within the EU and to France. Especially at a time when it comes to the effective enforcement of international law. Incidentally, also compared to the US government of Donald Trump, who breaks the right inside and-for example with his customs policy-even outwards. A consistent, future -oriented foreign policy is not primarily committed to the Netanyahu government, but of the Israeli entire society. Who should enforce international law if not the EU, Germany and France?

Mr. Kaleck, thank you very much for the conversation!
