Orbán admits “painful” defeat in parliamentary elections

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has admitted the defeat of his right-wing nationalist Fidesz party in the parliamentary elections. “The election results are clear, even if they are not yet final. For us they are painful, but clear,” Orbán told journalists on Sunday evening.

“We have not been entrusted with the responsibility and the opportunity to govern. I congratulated the victorious party,” said the right-wing nationalist head of government. His challenger Péter Magyar had already stated that Orbán had called him and congratulated him on his election victory.

“Whatever comes, we will also serve our homeland in the opposition,” Orbán told supporters in Budapest. “The task is clear: now that the burden of government work is no longer on our shoulders, we must strengthen our own community,” he added, referring to his supporters.

Over 60 percent counted: no change

After 60.24 percent of the votes were counted, nothing changed in the distribution of seats compared to the previous projection. Tisza would still have a two-thirds majority with 136 seats.
