US President Donald Trump places demands on the largest island in the world. Now several Nordic countries are offering his forehead.
Against the background of the takeover threats of US President Donald Trump, the other Nordic countries Denmark and Greenland have guaranteed their support. The Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Störe declared solidarity on Monday at a meeting of the Nordic heads in Turku in Finnish with the Greenland and Danish head of government. “We will announce this message everywhere: Whether in Washington, in Brussels, in Beijing or wherever,” emphasized Störse at a press conference.
In the past few months, US President Trump had repeatedly threatened to take over the use of violence with the takeover of the raw material-rich giant island of Greenland.
“The Arctic is a regulated area. The law applies, the responsibility of coastal states applies, and we will help every community that feels pressure in these values,” emphasized the Norwegian Prime Minister.
Danish and Greenland politicians insist on the fact that the autonomous territory, in which a majority of the population is long -term for independence, has to decide on its future and that the USA will never be “received”.
Trump’s threats to take over the island have also triggered fears in other areas of the far north, including in Iceland and on the Norwegian archipelago Svalbard. In addition, China and Russia are also increasingly active in the Arctic, where new sea routes open up due to climate change.
“Iceland is located directly below Greenland. We are a small country,” said Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir. “It is very important to us that there is a strong message from this region that international law is respected and that the power of the stronger does not become a new legal norm,” she said at the same press conference.
